Introduction

I do not claim that I have fully solved the cipher unless this will be checked by the experts. Page 1 and 3 messages are translated as best as I can into a message that I thought will be generally acceptable by the public. I admit that I made errors that may alter the whole story because English or Spanish is not my first language, in addition, the author’s choice of words is very tricky and playful. I have devoted months re-reading and re-checking the message to come up with the best possible solution.

This requires to be checked by cipher experts since miscounting is a possibility. I used up to three words prior to the corresponding word in each number given to construct English sentences, this followed a strict pattern up until the end of each cipher. Usage of words are documented into a separate sheet I named “The Beale Dictionary”, where I looked for the synonym or hidden meaning of words.

In general, the message was an instruction for Mr. Morriss to speak to the people, given by John, Elizabeth Wood Smith and the Beale party of their successful expedition to the Peaks of Otter Area or the Indies. The mainland where they buried the treasure belongs to Botetourt, however the hill that was given by Mary “Polly” Dooley-Wood, the exact place where the treasure is, belongs to Bedford.

Mary has the possession of their names and residences in a fourth cipher. In page 1, landmarks, directions and descriptions were given. In page 3 are the names and residences of John, Mary and Elizabeth Wood Smith and how to solve the missing cipher which I believed to be the real NUMBER 3. Current Page 3 however, was more about land ownership, purchases and property transfer, also giving some information which compliments the statements in page 1.

Basing on the message, one third of the gold was used as a purchase of the Harkening Hill. This is their original plan to bury their treasure, however, as they returned on their second expedition, they found out other group of Indians had settled in the area, thus decided to look for a new location which suits their standards.

They went to the Johnson ancestral home Area whose ownership I could not verify, definitely this person should also own the harkening hill and land where the Peaks of Otter Winery is standing, this could be Elizabeth Wood Smith. There, they found an Indian settlement where they said it was impossible to speak. They succeeded in communicating with them by giving them some of their personal belongings, and perhaps, through the Wood’s who acted as interpreters. I personally believed that the Wood’s family has a good relationship with the Indians tracing back from Thomas Wood Sr., the first settler.

In their expedition, they were aided by the Indians who offered to show them their land. Without opposition from each of the members, the party wonderfully accepted their offer and together, with the Indians as guides, they explored the wonders of the Majestic Blue Ridge Mountains. The Indians later claimed that their land was their greatest treasure, and as for the author of the cipher, it was his expedition.

The message is like a journal that was pieced together. This was written while they are travelling as there is a statement which said that they are interrogated, asking if the letter that he is writing will give him hundreds of dollars in return.

I encourage language experts and Historians to fully check the unedited message WORD by WORD. This solution is always FREE and OPEN FOR PUBLIC INTERPRETATION.

The Story

The Beale ciphers (or Beale Papers) are a set of three ciphertexts, one of which allegedly states the location of a buried treasure of gold, silver and jewels estimated to be worth over US$43 million as of January 2018. Comprising three ciphertexts, the first (unsolved) text describes the location, the second (solved) ciphertext the content of the treasure, and the third (unsolved) lists the names of the treasure's owners and their next of kin.

The story of the three ciphertexts originates from an 1885 pamphlet detailing treasure being buried by a man named Thomas J. Beale in a secret location in Bedford County, Virginia, in the 1820s. Beale entrusted a box containing the encrypted messages to a local innkeeper named Robert Morriss and then disappeared, never to be seen again. According to the story, the innkeeper opened the box 23 years later, and then decades after that gave the three encrypted ciphertexts to a friend before he died. The friend then spent the next twenty years of his life trying to decode the messages, and was able to solve only one of them which gave details of the treasure buried and the general location of the treasure. The unnamed friend then published all three ciphertexts in a pamphlet which was advertised for sale in the 1880s.

Since the publication of the pamphlet, a number of attempts have been made to decode the two remaining ciphertexts and to locate the treasure, but all efforts have resulted in failure.

The Paper Sequence

Below is a portion of Thomas. J. Beale’s message to Robert Morriss dated on January 4, 1822.

“I thought at first to give you their names in this letter, but reflecting that someone may read the letter, and thus be enabled to impose upon you by personating some member of the party, have decided the present plan is best.”

The Key, together with the Names and Residences of the Party never arrived to Mr. Morriss. If both the key and names were in Mary Polly Wood’s possession as stated in both page 1 and 3, the party must have decided to recover the treasure and cancelled its scheduled delivery.

It is also possible that they instructed another person to deliver such Key, as I believed that the KEY and NUMBER 3 is not sealed together in one container, this is to further conceal the party’s identity.

However, after solving the page 1 and 3, in my opinion it would be best to assume that the following should be the sequence of how the papers should be solved.

1.  Contents of the vault (Page 2)

2.  Locality of the vault (Page 1)

3.  Names and residences (Page 3, Solution to Paper NUMBER 3)

4.  Names and residences of the Party (NUMBER 3, Missing)

Starting from page 2 first, Mr. Morriss would have a little information or background about the clues EIGHTEEN and THIRTY-, which I documented in the “Landmarks” section.

Understanding this Eighteen and thirty took a very long time for me, until a friend sent me a document last September 2020. Without him this research will never make it this far. Thank you Mr. Gary K..

Marked as page 2, this was solved by James B. Ward 20 years after Mr. Morriss handed it to him in year 1862. Ward used the “Declaration of Independence” as the key to the 2nd cipher where a Substitution Cipher is used. In this kind of cipher, the units of plaintext are replaced with ciphertext, according to a fixed system; the "units" may be single letters (most common), pairs of letters, triplets of letters, mixtures of the above, and so forth.

Using the Substitution Cipher with the key of DOI, Page 2 will give the following message.

“I have deposited in the county of Bedford, about four miles from Buford's, in an excavation or vault, six feet below the surface of the ground, the following articles, belonging jointly to the parties whose names are given in number "3," herewith:

The first deposit consisted of one thousand and fourteen pounds of gold, and three thousand eight hundred and twelve pounds of silver, deposited November, 1819. The second was made December, 1821, and consisted of nineteen hundred and seven pounds of gold, and twelve hundred and eighty-eight pounds of silver; also jewels, obtained in St. Louis in exchange for silver to save transportation, and valued at $13,000.

The above is securely packed in iron pots, with iron covers. The vault is roughly lined with stone, and the vessels rest on solid stone, and are covered with others. Paper number "1" describes the exact locality of the vault so that no difficulty will be had in finding it.”

Disclosed in page 2 is the contents of the vault, indicating a stone and Buford’s as the main landmarks, also giving a general location of Bedford. This decoded cipher has led countless treasure hunters in search for the Beale fortune.

Believed to be the NUMBER 3, but these were the names and residences of the people who helped the Beale Party. Stated here is the Land purchases, transfer and solution to the real number 3.

Names and Residences of the Beale Party

This cipher will reveal the names and addresses of the party members. According to page 1 and 3, this cipher was left in Mary “Polly” Dooley-Wood’s possession. She could be found on the east side from the Johnson Ancestral Home, to the Harkening Hill Area, this should be marked as the real NUMBER 3.

The Page 1 and 3 Key

In finding the key I searched for the “US historical documents” on the internet. I needed another key as I do not believe that the Declaration of Independence will be used twice on the cipher. This leads me to the Letter of Christopher Columbus on his first voyage which perfectly fits for a key which has exploration or adventure. I then looked for the word ‘Gold’, count its number and write it with additional words before and after the word that was asked. I followed this process until number 8 followed by 15 appeared, when combined gives a sentence “at the glorious success that our lord has given me”, it was at this moment that I saw its pattern and think that I can solve it. With this, numbers are formed into words, then into sentences, then into paragraphs. The words are playful, truly a work of art.

There are words that has a hidden or double meaning, some, I admit that I could not figure out on my own. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to share this information to the public. An example of this is the word ‘PROCLAMATION’ which could mean “tell, speak, introduce or interact”, and the word ‘DISPLAY’ could mean “view, show, location or seen”. Another notable example of this was the repetitive use of the word ‘ISLAND’ which could mean a “hill, treasure or dollars”.

The original first voyage was written in Spanish which made me believe that some of the party members could be Spanish, and the number “2906”, the largest number is created to trick everyone into believing that the key consist of more than 2500 words. With this, people would ignore the “First Voyage” as the key to the ciphers. In reality the numbers “2906” is a combination of three numbers which is 2, 90, and 6 converted into “As I know(2) of(90) be rejoiced(6)”, forming a sentence translated into “as I know of happiness”.

The next page is the Letter of Christopher Columbus on his First Voyage. I have placed numbers after each word so there will be no difficulty in checking. There are hyphenated (-) words which I only numbered once, example of this is the word ‘SEA-COAST’. This might be the reason as to why there is a miscounting of numbers, it is possible that Thomas J. Beale has split this word into two and assigned a different number to each [example: Sea(1) Coast(2)]. These can be found on numbers 182 and 416.

More reasons as to why I believe that the “First Voyage” is the key to the ciphers.
